The shooting at a rally for former President Donald Trump is being investigated as an attempted murder, CNN, Associated Press and other media reported.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Saturday that he had been briefed on the incident and that the department was working with law enforcement to respond to and investigate the shooting.

Mayorkas said the safety of presidential candidates and their events is DHS’s highest priority.

“We condemn this violence in the strongest possible terms and commend the Secret Service for its swift action today,” he said in a statement. “We are in communication with President Biden, former President Trump, and their campaign teams and are taking every possible measure to ensure their safety.”
