2 arrested for their role in death of 2-year-old: Bristol Police

Luis Dejesus, 24, and Alyjah Almodovar, 21, were taken into custody this week and face multiple charges of physical abuse of a child.

BRISTOL, Connecticut – Two people were arrested in Bristol this week in connection with the death of a 2-year-old child in January, according to a news release from Bristol police Friday.

On January 9, Bristol police were called to a residential building in the city because a child had fallen down a flight of stairs and was unresponsive.

Officers performed CPR, police said. Bristol Ambulance Service arrived at the scene and took the child to Bristol Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.

“Officers observed a number of unusual injuries while attempting to resuscitate the child. Bristol Police Criminal Investigation was called to the scene and further investigation is underway,” Bristol Police Detective Ryan Kulig said in the press release.

As investigators later determined, the child had not fallen down a flight of stairs, police said. Instead, he had been the victim of physical abuse “over a long period of time,” which ultimately led to the child’s death, police said.

On Monday, 21-year-old Alyjah Almodovar was arrested and charged with endangering a child and intentional cruelty to persons. Police said she was being held on a court-set $100,000 bail.

On Friday, police arrested 23-year-old Luis Dejesus on charges including first-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, endangering a child, intentional cruelty to persons and making false statements. He was being held on a court-set $1 million bail, police said.

Police said Dejesus was already in the custody of the Department of Corrections at the time of his arrest and was charged with illegal possession of weapons and drugs as part of another Bristol Police investigation.

Police did not provide any information about the relationship between the two suspects and the minor victim. FOX61 News has asked for clarification but has not yet received a response.
