Trooper Proctor’s hearing on Monday after the Karen Read case

SOME ARE ALSO DEMANDING THAT OTHER DISTRICT OFFICIALS BE DISCIPLINARIZED. ALSO AS A RESULT. LAST MONTH, MICHAEL PROCTOR TAKE THE TESTIMONY IN THE KAREN REED TRIAL, AND THERE HE ADMITTED TO TEXTING WITH FRIENDS AND COLLEAGUES. A SERIES OF OFFENSIVE MESSAGES ABOUT REED, THE SUBJECT OF HIS INVESTIGATION, AND AT THAT TIME PROCTOR SAID HE REGRETTED THOSE TEXT MESSAGES. THE GOVERNOR ALSO SAID SHE WAS DISGUSTED. TODAY A COMMITTEE OF THREE STATE POLICE OFFICERS DISCIPLINED PROCTOR AND SAID HE SHOULD BE SUSPENDED WITHOUT PAY. COL JACKMAN ACCEPTED THE RECOMMENDATION OF THAT COMMITTEE AND IMMEDIATELY IMPLEMENTED IT. NOW THERE IS AN INTERNAL MATTERS INVESTIGATION ONGOING AND ONCE IT IS COMPLETED THE DEPARTMENT MAY TAKE FURTHER DISCIPLINARY ACTION WHICH COULD INCLUDE DISMISSAL FROM THE DEPARTMENT. The lead Massachusetts State Police investigator who was relieved of duty hours after the miscarriage of justice in the Karen Read murder trial was suspended without pay following a duty status hearing Monday. During the trial, Trooper Michael Proctor was questioned about messages he sent to a group of friends. After reading one of the messages, in which he called Read a “nutcase” and a swear word, he apologized to the jury for his “unprofessional” comments. Following the duty status hearing Monday, a spokesperson said the three-officer panel recommended that Proctor be suspended without pay. Col. John Mawn Jr., interim colonel of the Massachusetts State Police, accepted the recommendation, which went into effect immediately. The lead Massachusetts State Police investigator who was relieved of duty hours after the mistrial in the Karen Read murder trial was suspended without pay following a status hearing Monday.

During the trial, Trooper Michael Proctor was questioned about messages he had sent to a group of friends. After reading one of the messages in which he called Read a “nutcase” and called him a profanity, he apologized to the jury for his “unprofessional” comments.

Proctor described his messages as “very regrettable.”

Hours after the mistrial, Proctor was relieved of his duties and transferred from the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Criminal Unit, effective Sunday, July 7.

After Monday’s status of duty hearing, a spokesman said the three-officer panel recommended that Proctor be suspended without pay. Col. John Mawn Jr., interim colonel of the Massachusetts State Police, accepted the recommendation, which took effect immediately.

The ongoing internal investigation will continue, state police said.
