An Elgin man has been charged with first-degree murder of a woman he stabbed to death in his home on July 2.

Police learned of the death after the daughter of 65-year-old Timothy Edwards notified Elgin police of a possible domestic incident at her father’s home in the 1300 block of Fleetwood Drive, according to a news release from the Kane County Prosecutor’s Office and Elgin police.

Edwards met police at the door of his apartment and led officers into the bedroom where the woman, identified in court documents as Cheryl Aricioglu, was lying. She had no pulse and was not breathing. She was later pronounced dead at Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, the news release said.

Police described the incident as “domestic.” How Edwards and Aricioglu knew each other or what might have led to the knife attack was not disclosed. Neither Aricioglu’s age nor his address were known.

An autopsy conducted by the Kane County Coroner’s Office revealed that the victim had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest and defensive wounds to both hands.

Edwards was arraigned in court on Friday, and he will appear again for a hearing on Wednesday where a judge will decide whether he will remain in jail pending the outcome of his case.
