Sena leader arrested after son kills Mumbai woman in BMW crash

Mumbai:

The speeding BMW that rammed a scooter in Mumbai’s Worli this morning, killing a woman, was driven by the 24-year-old son of a senior politician from the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, police said. Police also suspect that Mihir Shah, who is a fugitive, was drunk at the time of the incident. His blood test report is awaited.

The accused is the son of Rajesh Shah, the vice-president of the Shiv Sena in Palghar district of Maharashtra. The politician and his driver Rajendra Singh Bijawat were arrested in the evening on charges including non-cooperation with the police and will be produced in court tomorrow.

A case was registered under the new penal code Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of wilful killing, reckless driving and destruction of evidence. Provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act were also invoked.

The vehicle is registered in Mihir Shah’s name. At the time of the accident, police said, the Sena leader’s son and their driver were in the luxury car. According to police sources, Mihir Shah was drinking at a bar in Juhu last night. On his way home, he asked the driver to take him for a long drive. The car reached Worli and then Mihir insisted that he would drive. Soon after he took over the wheel, the speeding BMW collided with a scooter.

On the scooter were Kaveri Nakva and her husband Pradik Nakva, both residents of Koliwada area of Worli. The fish-seller couple went to Sassoon Dock to fetch fish every day. They were on their way back when the BMW collided with their two-wheeler. The two were thrown into the air and hit the bonnet of the SUV. As the car sped away, Kaveri Nakva was run over. The car fled the scene and the woman was taken to a hospital where she was declared dead. Her husband Pradik sustained minor injuries.

According to police sources, Mihir called his father and told him about the accident. Since then, his phone has been switched off. Four police teams are searching for him.

Police investigations have also uncovered attempts to destroy evidence. The car’s windscreen has a Shiv Sena sticker on it, which was scratched, apparently to hide the vehicle’s connection to the Sena leader. One of the car’s number plates was also removed after the accident, but police searched CCTV footage of the area to locate the vehicle.

Maharashtra Chief Minister and Sena leader Eknath Shinde described the incident as “regrettable” and announced action. “The law will take its course, everyone is equal before the law. I have spoken to the police and strict action will be taken,” he said.

The incident came a few months after two 24-year-old engineers were killed in a similar drunk driving case in Pune. The minor accused was speeding in a Porsche after a round of drinking. The teenager’s father, a well-known real estate agent, his mother and grandfather were arrested after the accident for allegedly trying to destroy evidence.
