SHC suspends reinstatement of discredited BIEK chairman

Dr. Memon was removed from his post due to allegations of sexual harassment

KARACHI:

The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday quashed a notification reinstating Dr. Prof. Nadeem Memon as Chairman of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK).

Dr. Memon had previously been removed from office over allegations of sexual harassment.

During his appearance before the SHC court, the plaintiff’s counsel argued that Dr. Memon was removed from his post by the Provincial Ombudsman after he was found guilty of sexual harassment. Subsequently, the University and Examination Board had also suspended him. However, on December 12, 2023, the notice of his suspension was unexpectedly withdrawn.

The court found that the allegations of sexual harassment against Dr Memon were substantiated and stayed the announcement of his reinstatement as Chairman of BIEK and barred him from holding any other office until further notice.

SHC issues order against KE in case of power outages

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued a writ petition against K-Electric (KE) on a petition regarding announced and unannounced power cuts during the recent deadly heatwave in the metropolis.

KE lawyer Abid Zuberi Advocate requested a copy of the petition and asked for additional time to submit a report detailing their action plan and social responsibility during the heat waves, following which the court adjourned the hearing to July 15.

Usman Farooq Advocate, representing the petitioners including Jamaat-e-Islami, argued that KE is responsible for power generation and maintenance of transmission lines. Recently, several lives have been lost due to heat-related problems, which were aggravated by power outages in the metropolis.
