One dead in Yellowstone after shootout with police rangers

One person was killed after a shootout with police officers in Yellowstone National Park on July 4. The park says there is no active threat to the public.

According to a press release from the park on Thursday, one officer was injured but was in stable condition and being treated at a nearby regional hospital.

The standoff began late Wednesday night and continued into the morning of July 4. Later Wednesday, rangers responded to a report of a person with a firearm making threats in Canyon Village. When rangers attempted to make contact with the person, gunfire exchanged between officers and the person.

Yellowstone is not releasing the name of the deceased at this time. An area around the Canyon Lodge complex remained closed on Thursday.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is conducting an investigation with assistance from special agents of the National Park Service.
