Motorcyclist dies after rear-end collision with SUV in Chanhassen

The Minnesota State Patrol said the driver – a 33-year-old Bloomington man – crashed into the back of a Nissan Rouge at the intersection of Highway 5 and Great Plains Boulevard.

CHANHASSEN, Minnesota – A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with an SUV in Chanhassen Wednesday evening.

The Minnesota State Patrol website says the incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. on westbound Highway 5 at the intersection with Great Plains Blvd. Video from the Minnesota State Patrol’s camera system shows the driver of a Nissan Rouge pulling away from a stoplight in the right lane when the driver, a 33-year-old Bloomington man, approaches the SUV from behind at a high rate of speed, striking the slow-moving vehicle.

At that moment, the driver is thrown from his motorcycle. The State Patrol says he did not survive the impact. Two women from Aberdeen, SD were in the Nissan. It is currently unclear whether they were injured.

While the accident was being reconstructed and the scene was being cleared, the westbound lanes of Highway 5 from Highway 101 to Market Boulevard were temporarily closed.

Police will release the victim’s identity later Thursday. The accident remains under investigation.
