Russia marks Victory Day with attacks on Ukraine

Russia celebrated Victory Day, an annual celebration of victory over Nazi Germany, with a large military parade in Moscow after overnight attacks on Ukraine’s electricity infrastructure.

The event has long been used to bolster Russian patriotism and, in recent years, to justify the war in Ukraine. During a speech in Moscow’s Red Square, President Vladimir Putin railed against the West, accusing it of trying to “distort” history and “foment new regional conflicts.”
