Eleven people were injured at American Family Field in Milwaukee on Saturday when an escalator broke down after the Brewers’ baseball game against the Chicago Cubs.

The escalator was transporting fans from the stands to the box level of the stadium when it malfunctioned, “resulting in an increased downward speed,” the Brewers said in a statement Saturday.

Five of the eleven injured were treated in the stadium, while six others were taken to nearby hospitals with “non-life-threatening injuries,” the team said.

According to Greg Braggs Jr., who was among those injured on the escalator, people piled on top of each other during the incident.

“We all left the stadium on the top deck. We rode the escalator. It was packed from front to back,” Braggs told CNN. “It wobbled and made a noise that scared everyone, and then it just gave way and turned into an out-of-control roller coaster.”

Many screamed as the escalator picked up speed and people fell over each other, Braggs recalled.

“Some elderly people were very seriously injured and trampled,” he said.

In front of Braggs was a woman who he says he tried to keep up with, but both were knocked over as they reached the bottom of the escalator.

CNN has reached out to Milwaukee police for further information.

“Our on-site doctor and emergency services were immediately on the scene and we are grateful for their quick response,” the team said in the statement.

The Brewers lost to the Cubs 5-3. Both teams play again on Sunday at 2:10 p.m. ET.
