Police arrest suspect for attempted robbery and sexual assault at Gonzales supermarket

GONZALES – Police have arrested a person suspected of attempting to rob and sexually assault a Gonzales supermarket employee outside the store early Friday morning, Gonzales police said.

At around 4 a.m., an employee at Lamendola’s Supermarket was attacked by an unidentified black man wearing a gray hoodie and blue Dickies-style work pants as she fed some cats outside the store. According to police, he demanded money from the woman and she then threw her wallet at him.

The man then punched her and dragged her along the sidewalk, police said. The attacker fled when another employee arrived during the attack, police added.

“We have a person of interest in custody. GPD will continue to utilize all necessary investigative resources to ensure that the individual responsible for this heinous act is charged and that the best case is presented to the District Attorney to ensure that the individual responsible can and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Police Chief Sherman Jackson.

The incident is currently under investigation and Gonzales Police are asking anyone with information about the crime to call Lieutenant Bourgeois at (225) 647-9537.
