Victim of fatal fire drill incident identified as son of Miami-Dade firefighter – NBC 6 South Florida

The investigation into a fatal fire drill in Miami-Dade is gaining momentum as we learn new details about the son of the firefighter killed in the incident.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for his family, Fabian Giovanni Camero has been identified as the man killed in Friday’s incident in Virginia Gardens.

Camero, 28, was the son of Francisco Camero of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and was apparently working toward becoming a firefighter.

“Fabian was a brave and dedicated young man who passionately followed in his father’s footsteps to serve and protect our community,” the GoFundMe campaign states. “Cisco has always been a pillar of strength and resilience and tirelessly put his life on the line to help others. Now, during this time of unimaginable pain, he needs our support more than ever. The emotional toll of losing a son is indescribable and we hope to help ease some of the financial burdens that come with such a heartbreaking event.”

Miami-Dade officials are responding to a fatal incident that occurred Friday during a Miami-Dade Fire Department exercise.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and a group of international firefighters were conducting a training exercise at a building at Northwest 36th Street and 66th Avenue near Miami International Airport in Virginia Gardens Friday morning when the incident occurred.

Miami-Dade Police confirmed that a man was seriously injured during the exercise and was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Francisco Camero confirmed to NBC6 that the man killed was his son, but declined to comment further.

Aerial footage from Helicopter 6 showed smoke rising from the three-story building on Friday as several Miami-Dade Fire Department rescue crews responded, using ladders to get to the roof and breaking windows to get inside.

More than 30 emergency vehicles, including fire engines, ambulances and others, arrived at the scene.

Authorities did not provide further details about the exercise or the fire.

The person injured during a botched Miami-Dade Fire Department exercise has died, Miami-Dade police said Saturday.

The Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating along with arson investigators and the state fire marshal.

County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said she wants a full investigation into the incident.

“We need to understand exactly what happened. This requires a full investigation, which I have called for, because this should not have happened,” she said.
