Headlines: “300 million NHS files stolen” and Rowling attacks Labour

The front pages of the Daily Mail and the Daily Telegraph feature reactions to Nigel Farage’s comments that the West had provoked President Vladimir Putin into invading Ukraine.

The Sun newspaper points to a poll it commissioned which suggests Mr Farage will win the seat he is running for in Clacton on the Essex coast.

Mr Farage uses an article in the Daily Express to attack Labour’s plans to repeal a law providing a conditional amnesty for crimes committed during the Northern Ireland conflict. He asks how Labour can claim to be “the party of national security” when it wants to “strip the law that protects our Northern Ireland veterans from prosecution”. There is no direct response from Labour to the article.

The Times leads with comments from JK Rowling accusing Labour leader Keir Starmer of “abandoning” women concerned about transgender issues. In an article for the newspaper, she suggests that she might vote for an independent candidate in her constituency who campaigns for “clarification of the Equality Act”.

According to The Guardian, Labour is considering introducing a wealth tax to fund public services if it wins the election. The options being discussed also include changes to capital gains and inheritance tax, according to the newspaper.

A senior party source is quoted as saying Labour will “start from scratch” on public services and infrastructure. They say the party needs to show investors that it is “serious about borrowing and raising tax revenues”. However, a Labour spokesman stresses that none of the party’s plans require “an additional tax increase”.

“Rich foreigners turning away from Britain,” reads the front-page headline of the FT Weekend. It says that increasing numbers of them are moving to other countries because of the abolition of the “non-dom” regime that allowed them to avoid tax on their overseas income – a change supported by both Labour and the Conservatives.

According to the Daily Mirror, one of Stephen Lawrence’s killers, David Norris, has applied for parole as his minimum sentence of 14 years expires.

Stephen’s father, Neville Lawrence, told the newspaper he had written a statement to read at the parole hearing. He is quoted as saying Norris “needs to tell the family he is sorry” and that he “should say who else was involved in the murder.”

And the Daily Mail has a picture of a man holding a 5ft 3in cod. The paper says the fish could break the record for the longest cod ever caught. The British angler who caught it is dubbed the “Cod Father” in the paper and says the fish could feed “180 people”.
