FREE Juneteenth Holiday Specials on Houston Happens

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Today, June 16, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they had been freed, more than two years after the proclamation of ’emancipation. Since then, it has been a day of celebration for black communities.

The Children’s Museum of Houston is live in the studio with host Maggie Flecknoe to present a fun and educational celebration for the whole family. Additionally, The Savoy, a neighborhood bar in Houston’s Third Ward, is also celebrating with an event running through Sunday, June 20, featuring music, food and good times.

Juneteenth with the Heritage Society

Join the Heritage Society for an immersive day of history and celebration. Delve into the history of this important day and learn more about its significance. Houston historian and friend of the series, Mr. McKinneywill join us to share his thoughts.
