1 dead and 3 injured in Father’s Day shootings in Mississippi

Two domestic-related shootings in Mississippi left one man dead and three injured on Father’s Day.

In Vicksburg, police responded to a reported disturbance in the 2500 block of Drummond Street early Sunday morning. Officers found that an unknown man had shot two unknown women during a domestic dispute.

Both women were taken to a medical facility for treatment of their injuries. The condition of the victims is currently unknown. After a brief chase with police, the male suspect was arrested.

Nearly 70 miles south in Adams County, a man was shot in another domestic incident. Authorities said police dispatch received a call just after midnight from a woman screaming for help. As officers were en route to the scene on Carmel Church Road, a man named Randrell Jones called police about the same incident.

Randrell Jones told authorities that his mother, Tawana Jones, and his stepfather, Calvin Carter, had an argument. The stepfather allegedly entered the house without being asked and attacked Tawana.

According to Randrell, Carter, who was carrying a firearm, let his mother leave the house and the two left the house in the stepfather’s vehicle. Randrell followed the vehicle on Highway 61 South and told police the two had driven down Shieldsboro Road.

Then a volley of gunshots rang out. Carter and Tawana were taken to Merit Health Natchez for treatment, while Randrell was temporarily detained.

Sheriff Travis Patten reported that Carter succumbed to his injuries. Tawana suffered numerous injuries in the altercation but was released from the hospital on Sunday.

A sheriff’s office investigation revealed that Carter had shown up at the Carmel Road home where Tawana, his estranged wife, was staying. He allegedly parked in front of a locked gate and jumped the property’s fence before escorting Tawana to his vehicle before the fatal shooting.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing. No arrests have been made so far.
