Malden man arrested after $240,000 robbery in East Boston

A Malden man was arrested Saturday on a warrant related to a $240,000 robbery in East Boston this month after he and another man were allegedly caught trying to break into an apartment in the neighborhood, officials said.

According to a Boston Police statement released Sunday, 55-year-old Timothy Deconinck was arrested by police on a warrant in connection with a $240,000 robbery that occurred on June 7 at 230 Meridian Street.

In an earlier statement on the robbery, police asked for the public’s help in locating the two men connected to the crime, which occurred at 9:26 a.m. According to police, the thieves drove off in the victim’s vehicle, which was later found on Border Street.

The arrest warrant was issued for three charges, including unarmed robbery of a person over 65 as a secondary offense, car theft and impersonation of a public official, the statement said on Sunday. After his arrest, Deconinck was also charged with attempted felony, possession of burglary tools, criminal damage, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer, the statement said.

The second man allegedly involved in Saturday’s attempted burglary, 59-year-old William Cataldo of Saugus, is charged with possession of burglary tools, attempted commission of a crime, criminal damage and resisting arrest, police said.

Both men are expected to be arraigned in the East Boston Division of Boston Municipal Court. It was not immediately clear Sunday whether Deconinck or Cataldo had hired an attorney to represent him.

At around 1:20 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a reported burglary carried out by two men with power tools at 212 Waldemar Ave. This was a separate incident from the previous $240,000 robbery, the statement said. Upon arrival, police allegedly found Deconinck attempting to break into a residence with a drill and other power tools.

Police arrested Deconinck at the scene. Cataldo was arrested after a brief search, police said.
