Man killed in hit-and-run on Mission Street

A man was struck and killed early Monday morning on Mission Street near Cortland Avenue by a driver who fled the scene, police confirmed.

The driver of the vehicle was not arrested, said spokesman Robert Rueca.

Police responded to the 3400 block of Mission Street at 3:41 a.m. Monday morning and discovered an injured man, Rueca said. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man’s identity has not yet been confirmed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

San Francisco recently passed the ten-year mark of its “Vision Zero” goal, during which the city attempted and failed to eliminate traffic fatalities. Experts attribute this failure to a lack of focused, coherent efforts.

Much of Mission Street, including the area of the accident, lies in the city’s “injury zone,” where most accidents involving injuries and deaths occur. Monday’s victim is the 10th pedestrian killed in the city this year, bringing the total number of traffic fatalities in the city this year to 15, compared to 17 pedestrian deaths last year.

“The person killed at the intersection of Mission and Cortland is not just a number, it is a human life lost. Every life lost on the streets of San Francisco matters,” said Jodie Medeiros, director of Walk SF, in a statement. “We cannot let these tragedies pass unnoticed. The people of San Francisco need to know what is happening so they can demand change.”

San Francisco is one of six cities that will introduce speed cameras in 2025 as part of a state pilot program.
