Highway police officer suspended for threatening a truck driver

Viral video shows police officer pointing gun at driver and snatching his cell phone

RAWALPINDI:

A National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) inspector has been suspended from duty for allegedly abusing and threatening a truck driver near Burhan on the M1 motorway. Authorities have launched an investigation after video footage of the incident came to light.

The incident took place a few days ago. In the video, the officer can be seen walking towards the truck with a gun in his hand. In the video, the truck driver and his crew can be heard and seen saying, “Look, he is pulling guns on us” while being recorded. In the video, the truck driver and his crew can also be heard saying, “He is threatening to shoot us. He has the right to a fine but he is not following the law.” In the video, the MP inspector can also be seen snatching a mobile phone from the truck driver.

The video also shows the officer holding his rifle upside down, walking toward the truck driver, asking his colleague for help and talking on the radio.

The highway police suspended the inspector from duty. A NHMP spokesperson said the officer tried to threaten the driver after issuing him a ticket. He added that investigations were continuing to ascertain whether the officer was guilty. He insisted that strict action would be taken as per the law.

According to the spokesman, the highway police are known for their courteous behavior, where no compromises can be made.
