Woman dies in Camden crash Saturday – State’s first update

Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal car crash that occurred yesterday afternoon in Camden that left a woman dead.

Officials said that at about 2:33 p.m. Saturday, a 1996 Ford F-150 was traveling westbound on Westville Road when it came out of a gentle right curve in the area of Probst Lane.

For reasons still under investigation, the Ford was unable to maintain its lane and veered off the north side of the roadway, where it struck a mailbox before continuing northwest and striking a railing. The Ford rode on the railing for a short distance before falling into a deep ditch and striking an embankment.

The impact with the embankment caused the Ford to roll over onto its left side. The driver was partially thrown out of the driver’s window and was trapped under the truck when it came to a stop.

The driver, a 45-year-old woman from Smyrna, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is not being released until her family and relatives have been notified.

The road was closed for about four hours while investigators examined the scene of the accident and cleared the road.
