No prison sentence for North Carolina man found guilty of sexually abusing two children

FORSYTH COUNTY, NC (WGHP) — On Wednesday, a Forsyth County jury found 44-year-old Juan Carlos Trujillo-Reyna guilty of 10 counts of indecent abuse of a child, according to a statement from Forsyth County District Attorney Jim O’Neill’s office.

The state’s evidence stated that on December 14, 2015, a woman told the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office that her daughter had been sexually abused by the adult son of her daughter’s babysitter.

The victim was 11 years old when she told her mother about the attack. She said she was between four and five years old when she was attacked.

Winston-Salem police continued their investigation when officers learned that the babysitter lived within city limits at the time of the crimes.

Detective Robert Williams of the WSPD’s Special Victims Unit continued the investigation. He learned the name of the babysitter and the address where the assault had taken place.

The victim described numerous incidents of inappropriate touching and described at least one incident in which the suspect exposed himself to her and attempted to drag her into the bathroom.

Williams learned that the babysitter had four adult sons and that the victim was described as
stated that he believed the suspect was Trujillo-Reyna.

On August 14, 2019, the WSPD received a call regarding child sexual abuse.

The child’s pediatrician had reported that her patient had told her that when she was about four years old, she had been sexually abused by a man named Carlos in her babysitter’s home.

Williams was assigned to the case and learned that this victim, now fifteen, attended the same daycare as the first victim.

He interrogated her and she told him about numerous instances in which the defendant had inappropriately touched her on various parts of her body and in various rooms of the house.

She also remembered that the first victim was at the daycare and remembered seeing Trujillo-Reyna with the first victim.

Based on this information, Williams reopened the case of the first victim. The evidence linked the two cases and pointed to one person as the perpetrator.

Williams contacted Trujillo-Reyna and interviewed him.

Trujillo-Reyna told Williams that he lived at the address where the daycare was located at the time of the alleged assaults.

His mother was in charge of the daycare. He remembered that there would be small children at his house.

The defendant said he had no contact with the children and when he returned home from work at 4:30 p.m., he would come home and lock himself in his room.

Williams continued his investigation and found that both girls attended the daycare from 2009 until they started kindergarten in August 2009.

Trujillo-Reyna would have been 29 and 30 years old at the time of the attacks on the children.

He was arrested on January 16, 2020, on ten counts of indecent behavior toward a child.

The daycare center is no longer open.

The trial against the defendant began on Monday. After three days of hearings, the jury found Trujillo-Reyna guilty on all ten counts.

At a sentencing hearing, the State of North Carolina, represented by Deputy District Council,
Attorney Emily Davis asked the judge to sentence the defendant to consecutive prison terms.

The Honorable Andy Hanford of Alamance County summarized the offenses at sentencing.

The judge sentenced the defendant to three years probation without immediate prison sentence.
