Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind titles such as Dead by daylight And Islands of Insightannounced a wave of layoffs affecting 95 employees during a restructuring period. Behaviour Interactive was founded in 1992 and has studios in several countries. The company is one of Canada’s largest game developers and is known for the asymmetric horror title Dead by daylight. It is currently preparing for release The Cast of Frank Stoneanother horror game in DbD Universe and works on Project Ta third title in the franchise.

Having now filled five studios in three countries, Behaviour Interactive has announced it will be laying off 95 employees. The Montreal studio will be hit the hardest, with 70 employees leaving the studio. The announcement is part of the company’s strategic structural change during a turbulent time for the industry. Behaviour Interactive is just one of the latest studios to make layoffs, after Avalanche Studios Group recently announced office closures.

The changes are part of a re-orientation of the studio. During the industry’s growth phase during the COVID-19 pandemic, Behaviour Interactive more than doubled in size and increased its headcount from 575 to 1,300. During this time, the horror title reached over 60 million players and recorded DbD Partnerships with popular IPs such as Dungeons and Dragons,Stranger ThingsAnd Alan Wache. The studio also focused on developing titles outside the horror genre, such as What the fog And Islands of insight.


However, the restructuring will return the studio to its horror roots. The studio’s primary focus will continue to be Dead by daylight. The press release did not mention whether Project T would be affected by the layoffs. The Cast of Frank Stone is due to be released later this year, it is safe to assume that the title will still be released. The positions of those laid off were not specified, but it was noted that production, product, business development and marketing are the areas that will be restructured.

While the layoffs at Behaviour Interactive are not the largest in the industry, they come at a time when the industry is experiencing high unemployment rates across all disciplines and experience levels. The studio has promised support to those whose jobs were lost during the restructuring, but details of compensation or severance packages were not provided in the press release.
