The Atlanta Falcons won the 2024 offseason according to the 33rd team

The Atlanta Falcons have been criticized, criticized and criticized again for the way they have handled this offseason. Atlanta’s selection of Michael Penix Jr. in the 2024 draft caused far more conflict than a selection of a top-ten quarterback should for a franchise. So when someone praises the Falcons for other moves they’ve made, they deserve a little recognition. Marcus Mosher of the 33rd team reminded everyone that, despite their questionable first-round pick, Atlanta is still a big winner this offseason with the acquisition of quarterback Kirk Cousins.

The last six years have not been kind to the Atlanta Falcons. Not only have they failed to make the playoffs since 2017, but they haven’t won more than seven games in a season. Things took a turn for the worse in the post-Matt Ryan era as the Falcons went through several quarters. But the worst part is that Atlanta doesn’t feel relevant in the NFC South.

However, that changed after the Falcons signed veteran QB Kirk Cousins to a four-year contract this offseason. Despite dealing with an Achilles injury, Cousins instantly makes the Falcons relevant in the NFC. Better yet, he gives Atlanta one of the best quarterbacks in the NFC.

Things are set up nicely for Cousins to explode right off the bat. The offense will be led by Zac Robinson, a prominent member of the Rams coaching staff. He will run an offense similar to that of Cousins in Minnesota, with lots of playmaking and throwing in the middle of the field.

Cousins will play behind one of the best offensive lines in the league, and he has playmakers all over the field. The selection of Michael Penix Jr. at No. 8 is still confusing, but it shouldn’t have any immediate impact on the Falcons.

The Falcons landed the best player in free agency and are instantly a threat in the NFC. Atlanta is expected to make the playoffs this season for the first time in a long time, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the team make a deep run. Cousins adds credibility to the Falcons, which they haven’t been able to find in recent seasons.

When talking about the Falcons, everyone likes to talk about who isn’t on the roster, rather than focusing on who is. Atlanta has completely overhauled its offensive attack, moving from one based on overpowering its opponents to a more modern approach, where speed is used to stretch the defense both vertically and horizontally.

Atlanta is still the favorite (-105) to win the NFC South, according to DraftKings. That’s after missing the playoffs for six straight seasons, the longest drought since their eight-year drought from 1983-90.

With the offseason they’ve had, Atlanta is on track to end that streak.
