Police officer “intentionally” hit by car

A police officer was injured after a driver “intentionally” hit him with a car, a police authority said.

Wiltshire Police said the officer left his car on Saturday morning to speak to the occupants of a vehicle parked in a field near Devizes.

They drove off and collided with the police officer; the police are now looking for the driver.

Superintendent Conway Duncan said: “This is a serious incident where an officer was deliberately injured by the driver of the vehicle while in the execution of his duty.”

Police said the officer was on mobile patrol in a marked police car in Conscience Lane and spotted the vehicle heading towards Devizes at around 11:30am BST.

Despite his efforts to speak to the people in the vehicle, the driver began to leave the scene and intentionally hit the police officer.

He was injured and taken to hospital for treatment but has since been released to continue his recovery at home.

“Urgent requests”

Superintendent Duncan added: “We are providing ongoing welfare support to the officer and his family.”

“Our thoughts are with him and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

He said officers were conducting “extensive, urgent investigations to identify the person responsible for the incident.”

“We encourage anyone with information to come forward.”
