Oxnard police shoot suspected armed man walking through traffic

Oxnard police opened fire on a man they say was armed with a sharp object after receiving reports he was driving in the middle of traffic Sunday night, authorities said.

Officers responded to the area between Ventura Road and Doris Avenue at 11:26 p.m. after receiving multiple calls about the man. Investigators later learned he had an outstanding warrant for his arrest on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a stabbing, according to Oxnard police. Police said the alleged crime was unrelated to Sunday’s incident.

According to police, officers shot the man after he gave orders that he did not follow. Emergency responders treated him and took him to Ventura County Medical Center, where he is in stable condition.

The shooting was captured on an officer’s body camera and the footage will be shown to the public as part of a debriefing of the incident, police said, but a release date has not yet been set.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave.

Since the investigation is ongoing, no further details have been released.

Oxnard Police and the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Adam Aguilar at 805-385-7680 or [email protected].
