Police say Drake’s security guard was injured in a shootout outside the rapper’s Toronto home

A security guard for rapper Drake was injured in a shooting outside Drake’s Toronto home overnight, police said Tuesday.

The shooting was reported around 2 a.m. local time, Inspector Paul Krawczyk of the Toronto Police Service said in a press conference. The unidentified security guard was hospitalized and remains in serious condition, Krawczyk said. He did not provide any information about the security guard’s injuries.

The shooting is coming amid a rap beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. One of Lamar’s tracks featured Drake’s Toronto home as the cover.

Krawczyk said police “cannot provide any information about the motive at this time.”

He also said he couldn’t confirm whether Drake was home at the time of the shooting, but said police were in contact with the rapper’s team and that they were cooperating with the investigation.

The security guard was standing in front of the gate of the house when he was shot, said Krawczyk.

The shooting involved a vehicle, but Krawczyk said he could not yet classify it as a drive-by shooting.

During the press conference, Krawczyk stressed that information was “very limited” as the investigation was still at an early stage. He said officers were canvassing the neighborhood to talk to witnesses and trying to collect video footage.

Although police have already “collected some video evidence capturing the incident,” he said he could not provide descriptions of the vehicle or suspects at this time.

“We are dealing with video quality issues,” Krawczyk said. “Because we have information and can better analyze videos, we can provide more information.”
