4 dead and over 30 injured in collision between bus and freight train in Peru

LA OROYA, Peru (AP) — Four people were killed and more than 30 others injured when a passenger bus and a freight train collided in central Peru on Sunday, the country’s national police said.

Authorities said the accident occurred after 4 a.m. in the district of La Oroya, about 177 kilometers east of the capital Lima. The Ministry of Transport and Communications said in a statement that the cause was being investigated. The train and bus, both privately operated, had all the necessary permits, it added.

The ministry said that all of the injured had been taken to a nearby hospital. The agency did not initially release the names of the dead.

The bus had left Lima for the city of Huancayo. Pictures released by the police show the overturned bus on the Central Highway.
