Officer shoots dog in incident on Elmira’s south side

ELMIRA, NY (WETM) – An Elmira police officer shot and killed an aggressive dog during an incident on Elmira’s Southside Tuesday afternoon, police said.

According to Elmira police, an aggressive dog attacked an officer on Wallis Place around 12:40 p.m. on May 7. The officer fired his weapon at the attacking dog, and one bullet hit the dog.

According to an 18 News reporter at the scene, the dog appeared to be fine and went for a walk after the shooting. According to police, the dog was taken to a local animal hospital for treatment.

Officers notified officials at the nearby Parley Coburn School District about the incident.

The Elmira Police Department, Elmira Animal Control, Chemung County Sheriff’s Office and Elmira Fire Department responded to the scene.
