Downtown Houston streets remain closed as crews clean up falling glass after last week’s storm

Danger in the city center. Several streets are still closed in downtown Houston as glass continues to fall from broken windows. The skyscrapers ravaged by the storm are quite a spectacle.

The storm turned windows into thick, sharp potential weapons and glass falling several stories could certainly kill, so streets and sidewalks near buildings with broken windows and falling glass were closed.

“Most of the glass fell, probably 95 percent of the glass fell, but we don’t want anyone to be able to get hit by falling glass. You can imagine what that would do to someone,” says Kris. Larson, CEO of Central Houston Inc.

Many roads are closed downtown, as is the intersection of Milam and McKinney, as many buildings have many broken windows. You can almost stand in one place, and looking from building to building you will see dozens of broken windows.

“Most of the damage happened here in this part of downtown, actually in the southwest part of downtown, south of McKinney Street, generally west of Main Street and then to the is by Smith,” says Larson.

FOX 26 Houston is now on the FOX LOCAL app available via Apple TV, Amazon FireTV, Roku, Google Android TV and Vizio!

“It’s scary. It’s like you see it in pictures and I see it now, and it’s like it’s real,” says Stephanie, who works in Downtown.

“In addition to all of our crews, we had municipal resources and significant heavy machinery. We used independent contractors to help us with some of this work,” adds Larson.

As crews continue to clean up falling glass, downtown streets and sidewalks should be closed until Memorial Day, and any broken windows should at least be boarded up by then, but that doesn’t mean that every piece of glass will be destroyed. left.

“Just like when the Astros win, we find confetti for months. We’ll probably continue to find these little pieces of glass for weeks or months,” adds Larson.

Larson wants to point out that only streets in the southwest quadrant are closed. Downtown is open for business. The Houston Astros play Wednesday night and there is a comic book convention at GRB this weekend.
