New Maine State Prison warden appointed following investigation into harassment and misconduct

Nathan Thayer will start on Monday, May 20th

The Maine Department of Corrections has named a new warden for the Maine State Prison in Warren. Nathan Thayer will officially take over on Monday, May 20th. He began his career at the Maine Correctional Center in 2006 and has held various positions including director of security. For the past three years, he has served as jail administrator at the York County Jail. “We are excited to have Mr. Thayer return to our team as the new warden of Maine State Prison. I am encouraged by his proven leadership and experience.” “I am confident he will be an excellent fit for the position,” said Corrections Commissioner Randall Liberty. In February, Liberty confirmed to Maine’s Total Coverage that three senior employees at the Maine State Prison were on administrative leave as part of an investigation into allegations of misconduct by and among staff at the prison in Warren. These included Warden Matthew Magnusson, an assistant warden and a captain. The department became aware of the allegations in August 2023, which included allegations of harassment, victimization and retaliation among employees. and allegations of misconduct involving inappropriate relationships between staff and residents.

In February, Liberty confirmed to Maine’s Total Coverage that three senior employees at the Maine State Penitentiary were on administrative leave pending an investigation into allegations of misconduct by and among staff at the Warren prison.

These included principal Matthew Magnusson, an assistant principal and a captain.

The department became aware of the allegations in August 2023, which included allegations of harassment, victimization and retaliation among staff and allegations of misconduct involving inappropriate relationships between staff and residents.
