On May 16, 2024 at 12:22 p.m., Idaho State Police responded to a serious crash on Interstate 84 westbound at milepost 213 east of Heyburn. The collision involved a semi-truck and several other vehicles, resulting in one fatality.

Semi-trailer truck does not stop at the construction site

A 60-year-old man from Cleveland, TN was driving a 2016 Freightliner tractor-trailer pulling a trailer westbound on Interstate 84. The semi-truck failed to yield to slowing traffic in a construction zone, resulting in a chain reaction accident involving five other vehicles.

Vehicles involved in the accident include:
* A 2017 Ford pickup truck driven by a 53-year-old man from Cody, WY.
* A 2004 Ford F350 pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old man from Wilder, ID.
* A 2023 Kia Sorento driven by a 47-year-old man from Rexburg, ID.
* A 2018 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck driven by a 27-year-old male from Malta, ID.
* A 2010 GMC Yukon driven by a 63-year-old man from Anaconda, MT.

One death and several injuries

Tragically, the driver of the 2017 Ford pickup died from his injuries at the scene of the accident. A passenger in the same vehicle and the driver of the Chevrolet Silverado were transported by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

Traffic disruptions and emergency response

The westbound lanes of Interstate 84 were closed for about five and a half hours while emergency responders worked to help the injured and clear the scene. Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
