Heavy rain and some strong to severe storms are possible on Mother’s Day

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Unfortunately for Central Texas, Mother’s Day 2024 is looking a little damp. On Sunday, widespread showers and storms are expected to develop across Central Texas throughout the day.

Some storms could be strong to severe, producing quarter-sized hail and some gusty winds, but the overall concern for our region on Sunday will be the threat of flooding.

Prepare for Mother’s Day plans to be affected by rain showers and thunderstorms! Get ways to receive weather alerts and never drive through flooded roads! Sunday will be the best day for widespread rain in Central Texas, but the chance of rain and storms will remain into the new work week as a cold front moves through Monday.

A The flood warning is in effect for Central Texas from 7 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Monday, as heavy rain is forecast. Widespread rainfall amounts of 1″ to 3″ are likely for Central Texas, with isolated amounts of up to 4″ possible. Forecast models indicate the heaviest rain will fall near and east of I-35. But due to the amount of rain we have had so far in May, any further heavy rain could lead to flooding across the region.

Heavy rain is expected for Central Texas. Forecast models indicate the heaviest rain will fall in our northern and eastern sections. These are some of the same areas that were heavily hit by torrential rain earlier this month. Between half an inch and an inch and a half is possible for our western and southeastern areas. Some northern and eastern areas could see between 2 and 4 inches. The highest amounts of rain are expected to fall near and east of I-45. No matter how much rain you see, the risk of flooding increases due to saturated ground. Be sure to pay attention to the weather!

While the tornado threat isn’t zero, it looks low for our area on Sunday. The greatest threat of severe weather appears to be in our southeastern areas.

Now the chance of rain is increasing on Sunday due to an upper level storm system and a Pacific cold front. The storm system approaches Sunday, increasing the chance of rain and storms on Mother’s Day. Now the front itself is expected to slide through on Monday, and depending on the timing of the front and where it is during the day, the chance of showers and thunderstorms is possible across Central Texas from mid-morning into the afternoon. Currently, the chance of rain and storms is highest for our southern and eastern areas on Monday. There is also a chance for a few strong to severe storms with large hail and gusty winds and possibly an isolated tornado. Rain chances should decrease by Monday evening.
