Mother says her son, who was killed at a flea market, was a hard-working family man

Channel 9 spoke with the mother of a man who was shot at a busy East Charlotte flea market.

Shawn Dwayne Powell was working at the market when he was tragically killed.

His mother, Rachel Ammons, said Powell often worked at the flea market and always made a living.

Powell was a beloved family member who played the roles of a father, grandfather and son, Ammons said. Powell was a people person who enjoyed helping others. Ammons, now 79, is struggling with the untimely death of her son.

However, she remains hopeful and relies on her faith to get through the difficult times.

“I’m doing my best to persevere with the Lord’s help,” she said.

Police were called to the Midnight Rodeo flea market on Albemarle Road around 6 p.m. on Sunday. When they arrived, they discovered that the 51-year-old man had been shot. He died at the scene of the accident.

Earlier this week, police released security video on X showing a suspect on the run.

Investigators have asked for information and Ammons is asking for help.

“It means a lot to me to know that they got the one who took my only son away from me. “It means a lot to me,” Ammons said.

Powell was a craftsman and flea market seller, she said. He had done this for years to earn money to support his family.

“If he hadn’t done much, he would have said, ‘Mom, I thank God for the little part I did.’ He always thanked God for everything he did,” Ammons said.

Despite the loss, Ammons said she knows where her son is and she is confident the person who did this will be caught.

“He will still have his day ahead of him. You don’t do anything wrong and you get through it. You don’t do anything wrong and you get by,” she said.
