Trial begins in sexual harassment case against former BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh | City News

Over a year after former BJP MP and former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chairman Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was charged with alleged sexual harassment of several female wrestlers, the trial in the case began on Friday.

The Rouse Avenue court of Deputy Chief Magistrate Priyanka Rajpoot had summoned two police witnesses to open the case in the last hearing.

Though Constable Mukesh Kumar was in court on Friday, the phones (case property) from the forensic lab were yet to be received. ACJM Rajpoot called ‘Victim Number 5’ along with a witness who will corroborate their statements to appear in court on August 6.

Nilanjan Dey, representing the plaintiffs, said he was unable to reach “victim number 5” and that a schedule showing the availability of all five victims would be presented to the court at the next hearing.

In May this year, the court charged Singh under sections 354 (assault or force to a woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 354A (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code.

After the charges were filed, Singh pleaded not guilty.”Koi sahaal hello nahi hai. Galati kiye hi nahi to maanenge kyun (There is no question about it. If I didn’t make a mistake, why should I admit it?)” he had said.

In June last year, Delhi police filed charges against Singh for sexually harassing, assaulting and stalking six female wrestlers. In the 1,500-page chargesheet, police cited statements from at least 22 witnesses from four states, including wrestlers, a referee, a coach and a physiotherapist, who corroborated the allegations made by the six wrestlers against Singh.
