An 18-year-old man died in a car accident on July 14.

Owen Smith, 18, of Burlington, died at 5:37 p.m. July 14 on Kit Carson Co. Rd. V near Rd. 52, about 2 miles east of the prison.

According to accident investigator L. Middleton, Master Trooper of the Colorado State Patrol, the accident is described as follows:

Smith was driving a 2012 Ford F150 pickup truck east on County Road V when he lost control and veered counterclockwise as he left the northbound side of the highway. He overcorrected and veered the vehicle to the southeast; the pickup truck stumbled and rolled twice before coming to an uncontrolled stop on all four wheels facing southeast.

Smith was ejected from the sunroof and was pronounced dead at the scene by Kit Carson County Coroner Randy Gorton.

The report indicated that the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and that alcohol and speeding were suspected.

CSP Bert Kirby contributed to this report.
