One person was injured and one person is at large following an attack late Monday near Burcham Park in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kansas (WIBW) – One person was injured, one person was arrested and another is at large following an attack reported late Monday in a park north of downtown Lawrence.

The incident was reported around 11 p.m. Monday when Lawrence police officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Indiana Street after receiving a report of shots fired in the area.

Lawrence police officials said officers initially spoke to three people who were uninjured and said they had no information about an incident. Other officers were combing the area for more evidence.

According to officials, a blood-soaked man emerged from a wooded area near Burcham Park.

When officers found the victim, they said they determined that the man had not been shot.

The man told police he had been attacked and had open wounds on his head and back, officials said.

The victim was taken to hospital and police said he is expected to recover from his injuries.

The investigation into the incident and the evidence collected ultimately led officers back to one of the men they had originally approached, police said. One of the suspects was quickly arrested.

However, Lawrence police believed two men were involved in the incident.

As of Tuesday morning, officers were still searching for the other person suspected of being involved in the incident. Police said that person was not one of the people they initially approached.

The investigation is ongoing.
