Mancos couple and toddler killed in collision near Moab – The Journal

A Mancos couple and their toddler died Sunday in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 191 north of Moab, Utah, while traveling home from a softball tournament in Vernal, Utah.

According to a GoFundMe campaign set up by Tel Hamilton for the family, 31-year-old Derick Hurst, 28-year-old Shay Hurst and 3-month-old Skylar Hurst died in the crash.

Two of her sons, Jamie and Dean Hurst, were injured in the accident. One was taken to the hospital while the other was flown by helicopter to Salt Lake City.

According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, the Hursts’ Chevrolet Suburban was traveling southbound when it crossed into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with a motor home about 6 miles south of Interstate 70.

They were described as a “local family, loved by all.” They have five surviving children.

Derick Hurst was a graduate of Mancos High School and worked at Nice Electric before his death. He was also a wrestling and football coach in Dolores. According to Facebook, he and Shay married in 2021.

Shay Hurst was a graduate of Montezuma-Cortez High School and attended Walden University after graduating from high school in 2014. She worked at both Axis Health System and as a certified medical assistant and phlebotomist at Southwest Health System, but was not employed at either facility at the time of her death.

A GoFundMe campaign for the couple’s children has raised $26,964 as of Monday.
