Vigil planned for 13-year-old killed in Alderwood Mall

Macy Nearing misses everything about her friend Jayda Woods-Johnson.

“I miss her voice, her closeness, I miss her positive attitude,” Nearing said.

She first learned of Jayda’s fate through a text message from another friend, and later her social media was flooded with details.

“It was really hard,” she said.

On Wednesday, the 13-year-old was at Alderwood Mall when two groups of teens got into a fight. Lynwood police say Jayda was not involved in the fight, but she died after being struck by a bullet.

“This really hits home for me,” said Macy’s mother, Amanda Nearing. “Someone said it wasn’t that she was in the wrong place at the wrong time, she was a teenager at the mall, it’s just completely devastating.”

She tells FOX 13 that it was Macy’s idea to hold a vigil in honor of Jayda.

“Some of her classmates and friends will share some stories and then we will have a candlelight vigil and a moment of silence at sunset,” Amanda Nearing said.

The vigil is planned for Sunday, July 7, at 7:45 p.m. in Mountlake Terrace and the high school athletic field. Jayda’s mother told Amanda she was glad the vigil was at sunset because her daughter loved sunsets.

“She was always in a good mood, so sweet, she always managed to make everyone laugh,” said Macy Nearing. “She was just a positive person who was fun to be around.”
