State Senator Garlan Gudger issues statement on Sunday after jet ski accident

New details have emerged about a July 4 jet ski accident involving Alabama State Senator Garlan Gudger of Cullman. In his first public statement since the accident, Senator Gudger wanted to thank everyone who helped him at the scene of the accident at Smith Lake. “Without the passersby on the dock, the first responders who treated me on the lakeshore, the emergency helipad set up by Trident Marina, Alabama’s Air Evac Flight Team, and an amazing group of doctors, nurses, and administrators at UAB, I am certain the outcome of this accident would have been very different.” I remain under observation in the ICU at UAB, but have been able to walk down the hallway. “The physical recovery will be difficult for our family, but it will be made easier by the intercessions of friends, family, constituents, colleagues and even complete strangers who understand that healing comes from God. “Right now, I must focus on my recovery and cannot receive visitors, but please know how grateful my family and I are for everyone who has reached out to offer help and concern.” A news release said Gudger suffered three fractured vertebrae, six fractured ribs, a punctured lung and internal bleeding. He sustained the injuries after another watercraft struck Gudger from behind. He was then flown by helicopter to UAB Hospital on July 4 for surgery. >>Previous story: Sen. New details have emerged about a July 4 jet ski accident involving Alabama State Senator Garlan Gudger of Cullman.

In his first public statement since the accident, Senator Gudger wanted to thank everyone who helped him at the scene of the accident at Smith Lake.

“Without the bystanders on the dock, the first responders who treated me on the lakeshore, the emergency helipad set up by Trident Marina, Alabama’s Air Evac Flight Team, and a great group of doctors, nurses, and administrators at UAB, the outcome of this accident would certainly have been very different.

“I remain under observation in the intensive care unit at UAB, but was able to walk down the hall.

“The physical recovery will be difficult for our family, but it will be made easier by the intercessions of friends, family, constituents, colleagues and even complete strangers who understand that healing comes from God.

“At the moment I have to concentrate on my recovery and cannot receive visitors. But please know how grateful my family and I are to everyone who has offered us their help and sympathy.”

A press release said Gudger suffered three broken vertebrae, six broken ribs, a ruptured lung and internal bleeding.

The injuries occurred after another watercraft struck Gudger from behind. He was then flown by helicopter to UAB Hospital for surgery on July 4.
