Cyclist killed after collision with car in Gonzales

GONZALES, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – A bicyclist has died days after a car crash in Ascension Parish.

According to the Louisiana State Police, troopers were investigating a crash near LA Highway 429 and Martin Road on July 1.


During the investigation, police learned that Chant Parker, 39, of St. Amant, was riding his bicycle eastbound on LA 429 while a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas was also traveling eastbound. The driver of the Volkswagen attempted to pass Parker on the left and Parker veered into the Volkswagen’s path, causing the Volkswagen to strike the rear of the bicycle, police said.

Parker was reportedly thrown from his bike. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. According to authorities, police were notified on July 5 that Parker had died from his injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was uninjured. Police do not believe vehicle impairment was a factor in the crash, but standard toxicology samples were taken from the driver and parker.

This is an ongoing investigation.
