Man dies after placing burning fireworks on his head during July 4th Independence Day party, lawmakers say

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC/Gray News) – A South Carolina man has died after he hit his head with a lit firework during a Fourth of July Independence Day party, authorities said.

Deputies said they responded shortly after 10:20 p.m. Thursday, WCSC reported.

When officers arrived, they found a man, later identified as 41-year-old Allen Ray McGrew, lying in the street with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m.

Officials said McGrew died after setting off a “large firework” and placing it on his head.

The coroner said the firework exploded on his head, causing severe head injuries.

Deputies said McGrew was at a neighborhood street festival at the time of the incident. Details also confirm that passersby attempted to stop the incident.

Detectives are currently investigating this incident.
