District: Friday under hyperthermia alert

A hyperthermia warning is in effect in the district on Friday from 12 noon to 8 p.m. due to extreme heat.

The county’s Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security is warning residents that the heat index will be above 95 degrees. Residents are advised to take precautions to protect themselves and their pets from heat-related illness.

“Feels like temperatures between 100 and 112,” according to the National Weather Service.

The county’s safety tips include staying indoors whenever possible. Residents are urged to never leave pets, small children or the elderly in a car for long periods of time, even with the window open. The temperature inside a parked car can reach 54 degrees in a matter of minutes.
