Government decides not to block social media apps in Muharram

The federal government has decided that social media applications will not be suspended in Punjab during Muharram.

The Punjab government had requested that the platforms be suspended during the Ashura holidays.

The Punjab government has cited the possible spread of hate speech and misinformation as the reason for the planned move, with the aim of preventing sectarian violence at this sensitive time.

Earlier, a meeting of the Punjab Cabinet Standing Committee on Law and Order had decided to suspend services like Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok and Instagram from 6 to 11 Muharram.

The Ministry of Interior has now forwarded this request to the Ministry of the Interior and is calling for immediate action to ensure peace and security.

However, according to sources, the Interior Minister is not in favor of blocking social media platforms.
