One person was killed in a shootout with a Yellowstone National Park ranger Thursday morning after an exchange of fire with a gunman in Canyon Village, in the central area of the park, authorities said.

The ranger is injured but in stable condition and is being treated.

There is no active threat to the public, according to a statement from the Yellowstone National Park Public Information Office on Thursday.

The ranger is in stable condition and is being treated at a nearby regional hospital, while the area around Canyon Lodge remained cordoned off during the investigation, which is being conducted by the FBI with assistance from special agents from the National Park Service.

Rangers responded to reports that the incident began on Wednesday night and that a person with a firearm was making threats, the statement said.

When the rangers made contact with the person, an exchange of gunfire ensued between the person and the rangers.

The shooter is dead, the statement continued. “We are not disclosing the identity of the person at this time,” the statement said.

An earlier email from park ranger Cam Sholly to park staff, confirmed by the Cowboy State Daily, states that “numerous” other park rangers were involved in the incident but did not sustain any physical injuries, but that park management will provide assistance to them as well.

“This team did a great job today, as you will hear as more details become available,” Sholly told park staff in the email.
