Bomb disposal squad called to major incident in CBD

Investigations are underway into a serious arson and bomb attack in central Melbourne.

The incident began on Wednesday afternoon in Collins Street, with several police cars and bomb disposal units on duty.

A video on social media shows several police vehicles blocking the main road.

The road was closed in both directions between Queen and Elizabeth Street, but has now reopened.

Numerous shops and buildings had to be closed and trams could no longer drive through the street.

A police statement said the incident had no terrorist background.

“Police arrested a 33-year-old man on Collins Street in Melbourne’s central business district shortly after midday today,” police said.
