The Houston Astros pitcher ended a historic streak Friday night

The New York Mets defeated the Houston Astros 7-2 on Friday night at Citi Field to continue their impressive June streak. Thanks to their strong play, the Mets are now 40-39 on the season and continue to assert themselves in the National League playoff picture.

After the loss, the Astros are now 40-41 and 5.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners in the American League West.

In the defeat, Astros pitcher Ronel Blanco ended a historic streak.

Ahead of the match, @OptaSTATS posted this note on social media:

@Astros Ronel Blanco has gone multiple innings and allowed five hits or fewer in his 14 starts in 2024.

This is the longest such streak for an American League starter to start a season in league history (the American League began in 1901).

The Mets got Blanco for six hits in 5.2 innings to end the streak. He allowed six runs, but only three were earned. Blanco, who has been a huge blessing for the Astros this year in the face of huge injury issues, is now 8-3 with a 2.49 ERA.

It was by far the best season of the 30-year-old’s career, having only pitched in 24 games before that. He also had a hit in his first start of the season in April.

The Astros and Mets will face off again Saturday afternoon, with first pitch scheduled at Citi Field at 4:10 p.m. ET.

Framber Valdez pitches for Houston while Tylor Megill pitches for New York.
