Newark Airport runway closed after plane incident – NBC New York

Some flights to Newark Liberty International Airport were canceled after a plane veered off the airport runway while landing Thursday afternoon, the FAA said.

The FAA said some flights to Newark had to be stopped at their departure airport after a private Embraer business jet veered off the runway, which remains closed. As a result of the runway closure, the airport’s capacity to accommodate incoming aircraft is reduced, according to the FAA.

According to the port authority, a wing of the private plane was damaged in the incident, which occurred around 1:50 p.m.

No injuries were reported. The runway remains closed for the investigation, which could impact arrivals and departures, according to the port authority.

The FAA website listed a temporary ground stop in Newark starting at 3 p.m., which was later changed to a ground delay.

Departures from Newark were delayed by 15 minutes or more, while flights to Newark from other airports were delayed by an average of about 95 minutes, the website said.

United Airlines told a passenger on social media that some flights would have to circle Newark airspace.

“One aircraft was stuck on the EEA runway and some aircraft had to circle the airspace,” the post said.
