UB head football coach Pete Lembo ready to rebuild

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) — Pete Lembo returns to the Mid-American Conference as the University at Buffalo’s 28th head football coach with a lot on his agenda, and he’s looking to revamp the program.

“Consistency, I look for consistency and I believe deeply in structure,” Lembo said.

Lembo’s resume speaks for itself and his most recent stop was a success in South Carolina. With the Gamecocks, Lembo formed one of the best special teams units in the country.

“A lot of people think of special teams in relation to a kickoff or punt return, or blocking a punt. Yes, these are important elements, but in reality it all starts with the fundamentals of the game,” Lembo said.

With his knowledge of special teams combined with his years of experience as a head coach at Lehigh, Elon and Ball State, Lembo understands the importance of leadership.

Fortunately for Lembo, the Bulls were able to keep two key pieces on defense.

“Red Murdock did a great job leading our defense at linebacker during the spring semester. I really like his focus and attitude, and he has embraced this role,” Lembo said.

The Bulls also brought back fifth-year player Shaun Dolac after entering the transfer portal in December.

“He’s a veteran who has also played a lot of football as a linebacker, and he understands that a big part of his role is going to be developing leadership in this locker room,” Lembo said.

Heading into the new season, is that enough for a team that has gone 14-23 over the past three seasons?

“If you have good morale and a cohesive team, you have a chance to succeed, and that’s what I see happening,” Lembo said.
