Atlanta submits proposal to host Sundance Film Festival

The annual festival, based in Utah for more than 40 years, announced in April that it was exploring “viable locations” in the United States to host the event.

ATLANTA — The city of Atlanta has officially submitted its request for proposal to host the prestigious Sundance Film Festival beginning in 2027.

The annual festival, based in Utah for more than 40 years, announced in April that it was exploring “viable locations in the United States to host the Sundance Film Festival beginning in 2027.” Last month, it was announced that three Georgia cities – Atlanta, Athens and Savannah – were among 15 cities to participate in the second phase.

On Monday, the city announced its proposal and launched a website explaining why Atlanta should be chosen to host Sundance, including the city’s dedication to the arts, population diversity, public transportation, hospitality and things to do and see around the metropolitan area.

“We are honored that Atlanta is being considered as a potential host for the Sundance Film Festival in 2027 and beyond. Atlanta is where the worlds of film, entertainment, economic development, diversity and inclusion meet and grow cohesively,” said Mayor Andre Dickens. “We are ready to show the Sundance Institute that Atlanta is the place where opportunities are endless and Sundance can continue to shine.”

Additionally, to support its bid, Atlanta and its partners have already pledged $2 million in financial support to support the success of the festival.

The final venue selection will be announced later this year or early 2025, the Sundance Institute said.
