Prosecutor calls on police to continue gun rights investigation into Michigan lawmakers

LANSING, Michigan (AP) — A Michigan prosecutor on Friday asked police for more information in the investigation into a Republican lawmaker who was arrested after officers responded to reports of possible shootings in the state capital.

John Dewane said Lansing police have filed a motion to charge Deputy Neil Friske, but he asked officers to continue the investigation.

“Our office will continue to work with law enforcement on this matter,” said Dewane, the Ingham County prosecutor.

Friske, 62, was arrested around 2:45 a.m. Thursday in the area where he owns a condo. He was released Friday.

“Our position is that Representative Friske is innocent, and we will work to establish that,” defense attorney Ed Zeineh told the Associated Press. “I have no substantive comment on that. I have not received any police reports. We are just at the beginning of our investigation.”

Friske has demonstrated a conservative voting record during his first term in the House of Representatives. He represents Charlevoix and Emmet counties, as well as parts of Cheboygan, Chippewa and Mackinac counties, all in northern Michigan.

His family runs a popular orchard in Charlevoix County.
