Unrepentant woman brutally killed parents in southern Utah and tried to kill her brother, police say

WASHINGTON, Washington County – A woman who reportedly told police she hated her parents and felt no remorse was arrested Wednesday. She is accused of brutally shooting her parents multiple times in their Washington home, prompting a nighttime manhunt before she was finally found and taken to jail.

Collin Troy Bailey, 28, who police say is currently undergoing gender reassignment surgery and calls himself Mia Bailey, was arrested as part of the investigation on charges of two counts of aggravated murder, attempted aggravated murder, seven counts of shooting with a firearm and aggravated burglary.

The victims were identified as Joseph and Gail Bailey.

Mia Bailey told police “that she did not regret her actions and that she would not change her behavior. Mia said, ‘I would do it again. I hate her,'” a police affidavit states. “Mia told officers that she went to the apartment with the intention of killing her parents.”

Richard Zyszkiewicz lives in the area where the shooting occurred and said there was “volatility and bad vibes” within the family. Bailey also told police of “strained relationships with several other family members. Several family members told officers they were afraid of Mia. These family members were all looking for alternative lodging for the night to ensure their safety.”

According to police, emergency dispatchers received a call from Bailey’s brother shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday reporting shots fired at 1039 E. Chinook Drive in Washington City.

“It was reported that the reporting party believed his parents had been shot on the upper floor of his home. The reporting party was inside a neighbor’s home at the time, having fled the home upon hearing the gunshots,” the affidavit states.

Officers responding to the call found the front door partially open and immediately entered.

Several shell casings were found on the ground floor near the stairs and in the living room, police said. Gail Bailey’s body was found on the ground floor, and her husband’s body was found in the hallway leading to the master bedroom, the affidavit said.

According to the police report, Bailey’s arrival at her parent’s home in her Kia Soul was recorded by a neighbor’s security camera. After her arrest, she gave investigators gruesome details of the murders, stating “that she entered the home and almost immediately began shooting at her mother,” the affidavit states. “Mia stated that her father … heard the gunshots and began walking toward her. Mia stated that she shot her father in the head and he immediately fell to the ground.”

According to police reports, Bailey said she went downstairs for a while, then went back upstairs and fired more shots. “Mia described returning to her father, who was on the ground, and shot him in the head again to make sure he was dead. During this time, Mia … went back to her mother and shot her in the head to make sure she was dead,” police wrote in the affidavit.

According to police, Bailey’s father was shot twice and her mother four times.

After killing the parents, Bailey fired a shot into the bedroom door where her brother had locked himself, the affidavit states. “Mia stated that her brother was not her primary target, but she would not have been sad if the shot had killed him.”

Officers from the Washington Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Utah Department of Public Safety began searching for Bailey throughout the night. The search prompted a 911 alert for part of St. George. Residents in the Bloomington Hills and Fort Pierce neighborhoods were asked to stay safe for most of early Wednesday. Residents reported that a helicopter circled the Bloomington Hills area toward the river surrounding the Fort Pearce Wash most of the night into Wednesday morning, apparently searching the field for Bailey.

Just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, police received a report that Bailey was seen in the area of Horseman Park and River Road in St. George.

“Officers arrived on scene and observed Mia walking north through the valley toward the Painted Desert neighborhood. Mia was ordered to stop, at which point she pulled a handgun from her waistband, put it to her head, and continued to walk away from officers without complying with their instructions. Officers lost sight of Mia as she walked into the dense brush in the valley/ravine,” the arrest report states.

The curfew was lifted around 7 a.m. At 8 a.m., police received a report that Bailey “may have been in some bushes in an open field near the new St. George’s Temple,” the affidavit states.

Some St. George residents in the 2800 East and 1000 South area said they watched as Bailey was surrounded and eventually surrendered without further incident around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

“Mia describes jumping fences or walls, hiding in bushes, sleeping in a park restroom, and other attempts to evade police. Mia bragged about her ability to evade police efforts to locate her, including evading police officers, hiding from helicopters, and hiding from drones,” police wrote in the affidavit.
